June 1, 2002 – The wife and two children of 42 year old Kip Johns of Stanwood were killed in a head-on collision on Highway 12 near Walla Walla. He was a long time PD and morning personality of KCMS-FM “Spirit 105.3″/Edmonds. Johns and another son were injured in the crash. A Walla Walla man was charged with vehicular homicide. He pled guilty to three counts of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular assault.
Jose Luis Garcia-Mayorga admitted driving under the influence of alcohol and causing the deaths of Suzanne Johns, 38, and two of her children – Ty Johns, 7, and 20-month-old Ashley Johns.
Prosecutors recommended, and Garcia-Mayorga was sentenced to serve, seven years in prison.
