The Ampex PR-10 along with the Ampex 601 & 602 were the ‘warhorses’ of the production room. The PR-10 came with a locking lid & looked just like a suitcase when the removable lid was closed. This made it a great machine to pack away for live remotes & play-by-play broadcasts. Remember the fun we used to have with splicing blocks? One wrong move while trying to spool & trim a cart tape for 60’s or 30’s & you could lose a fingertip! A box of band-aids was always a standard item in production studios. One always knew the hardcore veterans within the industry by the fact the tips of their fingers were often missing, or at the very least, covered with multiple band-aids.
