Superjock on KPUG

Beware, despite my carefully crafted and misleading title, this blog post does not include an audio recording of Superjock Larry Lujack on-air at KPUG 1170 in Bellingham. That is because he never worked at KPUG and no such tape exists.

Here is the connection with KPUG and Lujack: Recently at QZVX we posted the article Lujack: Radio Game Changer & One Guy Who  Played the Game. The article was written while collaborating with Gary (Burleigh) Shannon. The story has been a hit with Lujack’s Facebook fans, his Seattle fans, KJR colleagues, and his fan base and colleagues in Chicago and other parts of the country.

In researching that article with Gary, I discovered an apropos column that was posted by the late Norm Gregory at his webpage. It is a clipping of a Victor Stredicke column that must have been published in1969. In the piece, Lujack refers to having been at WLS for two-years and he moved to WLS in ’67.

Personally, I find the article interesting for a number of reasons (1) Lujack was a famous jock to be referencing KPUG as a good station (2) I met Gary Shannon when he was at KPUG in 1966, (3) I met Norm Gregory when he was at KPUG in 1967, and (4) in 1974, at 22-years old, I worked on-air at KPUG. Needless to say, this nostalgic column resonates with me. Heck, why wouldn’t it? I have lived in Bellingham my whole life and back in the day I thought KPUG was pretty hot stuff!
