The FCC today approved the acquisition of Tribune Media by Nexstar Media Group which will make it the largest broadcast group in the country. The DOJ signed off on this deal weeks ago & the FCC was the final hurdle holding up approval. In some overlapping markets Nexstar will spin off some television properties to Scripps, Circle City broadcasting I, Inc. & Tegna. Locally, this deal makes Nexstar the temporary owner of “Q13” KCPQ-TV & “JOEtv” KZJO-TV. The ownership of these is believed to be temporary as FOX has expressed it’s intentions to acquire these stations plus a few others from Nexstar in other markets. The sale is worth $4.1 billion according to the “Q13” website & will make Nexstar the owner of more than 200 stations nationwide. Nexstar has also made a deal with FOX to implement network affiliation at many of it’s new properties. The ultimate ownership of “Q13” & “JOEtv” ain’t over with yet!
