    Dick Ellingson says:

Reporter/photographer Harlan (Harley) Hudgens was a classmate of mine. He had a sister named Melody. His father, Elmo, was a King County Sheriff’s Deputy and named his son after the boss, Sheriff Harlan S. Callahan.

Harlan Callahan was the county’s chief deputy coroner until he was elected King County Sheriff in 1942. In 1955 he lost his bid for re-election to Tim McCullough.

In 1945, alarmed by rising juvenile delinquency, Sheriff Callahan formed King County’s first Boys Club, at Greenwood Avenue and North 85th Street in Seattle. It became the Boys & Girls Club and now has 34 locations.

The former sheriff was found guilty of tax evasion in 1956 and served 22 months at McNeill Island Federal Penitentiary, where he was a librarian. Thanks to a presidential pardon, his civil rights were restored.

Here’s a photo from 1947, boys at their club. Is that Kathryn Wise at the KOMO mike? I think the little lad at lower left is lost in love!
