I distinctly remember watching that J.P. Patches Christmas special that evening in 1959 when I was just 4 years old. It stood out in my mind not only because of the pantomime format, but also because it was so unusual to see J.P. Patches in the evening. At any rate, I was completely captivated. I think my twin sister was as well.
Why did Ace Frehley get kicked out?
Despite what they say, Gene and Paul wanted him to stay in Kiss. According to a book by Chris Lendt, called Kiss And Sell, they were in Breach of contract with their record label.
The band signed a very lucrative contract with Polygram records in 1980.
Ace left the band anyway. (More)

I saw that one also. Memorable because of the pantomime. Great show.
