As a young man, I worked for the Communicana Group in Indiana, AM-FM-TV in Elkhart-South Bend, AM-FM-TV in Ft. Wayne, plus the Elkhart daily newspaper and the Hotel Elkhart. I found out that Communicana was family-owned when I said on the air, "This weather forecast is a dilly!" My station manager burst into the control room and told me never to say that again. It turns out the owners were the Dille family (yes, pronounced "dilly"), who incidentally had made their fortune as copyright owners of Buck Rogers comics and movies.
The Cowles Family still owns KHQ TV as well as a cluster of Montana TV outlets. They are a good operation...
At one point, the Baker family owned the Tacoma News Tribune, Cable TV Puget Sound, KTNT-AM, KNBQ-FM, KTNT-TV and Radio Page (beepers). There is a medical center in Tacoma named in honor of the Bakers.
