QBird: KCPQ Station Mascot

Taking it’s place in the TV Mascot Hall of Lame, the QBird. Not as cartoonish as the Kraken Buoy, the QBird never gained the same fame as the KING 5 Mighty Mike. There is no audible noise from the QBird in this video, so it is not known what, if any, sound the QBird ever made. I don’t recall the rich history of the QBird, but if there wasn’t more to the bird costume, then this mascot was really, really lame!

KCPQ 13 had its own Kids Club. Commercial breaks during kid shows were with Laurie Hamel (Nelson), https://www.linkedin.com/in/lauriernelson, and Q Bird. Club members received a newsletter and membership card allowing discounts and freebies at local businesses.

I remember those days! My sister and my mom were Q-Bird!! I was in a lot of their specials and commercials. And Seattle parades on the KCPQ float! I miss the kids club days! They even had a local Kids Fair with lots of characters like Wacko, Yacko and Dot. And the Tick, and the Simpsons. Those were the days!

Kids club and Laury Hammel were so awesome, I remember the times of day that it came on with such happiness, and I didn’t have much of it during that time as a kid. I called in one time and won tickets for prescreening of Beethoven, it was in 1992. I still remember their phone number it was 1-800-KID-1313 😁. And you had to call it a bunch of times because the line was always busy. They ran a couple of promotions where you could get a free meal at Taco Time and Burger King if you showed them your KCPQ kids club card. Those were the days I felt so special having that card. Laury Hammel seemed like such a genuinely good person. I hope she’s doing great.
