KXKVI & The Galaxy Being – From The Outer Limits Of Andromeda

• Production took place at the real-life KCBH (a classical music FM station at the time, now known as KYSR, “Star 98.7”), located at 9000 Alto Cedro Drive in Coldwater Canyon/Beverly Hills, California. They used both the exteriors (including the building and grounds) and interiors (studios, transmitter areas) for authentic-looking scenes of the station operations, control room, and transmitter shed. Additional filming occurred on the MGM backlot and at KTTV soundstage #3, but the radio station itself provided key location shooting over nine days.

• I've been trying to DX this station since it first came on the air. Would love to receive a QSL card from them. Probably the rarest catch in all of radio broadcasting.

  • I heard they lost their license and went dark in 1963 after some violations due to unauthorized power increases, illegal television transmissions (KXKVI was not licensed for tv) and destruction of the transmission tower, all due to crazy actions by the engineer/co-owner of KXKVI.

• My absolute favorite episode of The Outer Limits I always wondered if the interior shots were done at KTTV studios or actually done at KXKVI KCBH back then today known as KYSR
  For over a year when I first saw this episode as I was only 11 I couldn’t go upstairs to bed alone Yes true story
  This was so daring considering it was the early 60’s

  • My guess, based on the microphone just setting on the board rather than being a boom mic setup, this was recreated in the CBS Television studio. Outside shots may have been at the station.

      • Someone on another broadcast board thinks the station was filmed in Beverly Hills at the site of KCBH 98.7 now known as KYSR.

      • I agree Jason the mic on the OL looks cheesy I have sat at the board and their mic was on a boom I hope this kicks up some interest
        The radio station I sat at was literally right behind my grandparents house with 3 towers and I used to look out the back window at night to see if any Andromedeans were coming
        It sure made a lasting impression in my head I can watch it now and it’s ok but being 11 it scarred me for a good while I got over it !

        • Outer Limits aired right before bedtime. There were a couple episodes like this one and "The Sixth Finger" which featured another very scary creature (featuring David McCallum).

      • But that mic on the OL doesn't seem broadcast quality. Is there an engineer that might clarify what we are seeing?

• I couldn't do a 4-hour shift without headphones. Buddy Maxwell was a real laid-back pro.
