1/4/87-Ready Or Not, Here’s Personality Rock

The new 96.5 FM begins tomorrow, but it doesn’t have a name yet.
“You can count on some great rock ‘n’ roll from us, and some insane fun,” said Steve West, general manager of the radio station that used to be KQKT. (The KQKT name still will be used once an hour, but other references to the station will be “the new 96.5 FM.”)

“We are pretty close to the music we want,” West said.

“Adult album-oriented rock, without the hard, bottom-end.”

The station is playing in depth from current albums _ album tracks not routinely heard on other stations _ and is trying to build up a supply of older rock albums.

Robin Erickson and John Maynard, formerly morning personalities at KISW, will be the new station’s morning team, with some familiar “funny-voice extras,” such as Roy Otis and James, participating on most mornings.

Middays, from 10 to 3, the announcer is Larry Snider, formerly with KQIN; before that, he was with KZAM and KEZX. Snider also will be music director.

In afternoon drive, to 7 p.m., Gary Crow and Mike West, another commute team previously heard on KISW, will be heard.

The station has also appropriated some new salespeople from competing radio stations, including Mark Jeffries, sales manager, from KISW, and Marty Loughman, national sales manager, from KHIT.

ENUMCLAW CHANGE

Gary R. Holzschuh has purchased KENU, 1300 kHz., in Enumclaw, from Reverman Broadcasting, and will serve as general manager and “Gary Starr,” morning drive-time personality.

The music format includes hit music, with favorites from the past. Bob Warnes is news director; Dave Cool is the afternoon voice.

The station is a daytime-only operation, but Holzschuh said the Federal Communications Commission has granted permission to add nighttime service.

TWISTING THE DIAL

Interviews and daily reports on the Seagram’s U.S. Open bowling tournament are airing daily on KTAC, 850, within the nightly “PM Tacoma” talk show, at 7 p.m….America’s Cup reports from Australia are airing at 8:15 weekday mornings on KOMO, 1000 kHz. In February, Larry Nelson, morning personality, and Bob Rondeau, sports director, will broadcast from Freemantle, Australia, reporting on activities affiliated with the America’s Cup races….National Public Radio will begin a new Sunday program, “Sunday Weekend Edition,” hosted by Susan Stamberg, beginning Jan. 18. It will be carried on both KUOW and KPLU, as is its predecessor, “Weekend Edition,” a Saturday feature….Alice Porter will transfer from KEZX to KLSY-AM-FM, to become afternoon news anchor and traffic reporter….The hourly news on KTAC is now from Satellite News Network, instead of ABC-Radio.
