VICTOR STREDICKE – November 1, 1987 –The Tacoma Stars indoor soccer broadcasts transfer to KOMO, 1000 kHz., beginning at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Stars asked KOMO to carry the games after a couple of broadcast seasons on KTAC. The club was concerned about KTAC’s coverage capabilities, since many of the fans come from King County. KTAC’s broadcasts can seldom be heard north of Federal Way.
“The successful South Sound sports franchise is ready to go regional,” said Michael Bettelli, KOMO program director. Indoor soccer, it seems, is ideally suited to radio because the action is fast and virtually non-stop. The season opener in the Tacoma Dome is a rematch of last year’s exciting seven-game Major Indoor Soccer League championship series between the Dallas Sidekicks and the Stars, won by Dallas. Dick Calvert, who previously announced for KTAC, will continue for KOMO. Bill Swartz, KOMO’s sports director, will supply color for home games. This sports affiliation is nothing new for KOMO. Previously, the station broadcast Seattle SuperSonics, Seattle Sounders and University of Washington football and basketball games. The station lost the Sonics and Huskies to KIRO Radio. The Sounders franchise was terminated in the early 1980s.

George Harris has left as news director at KING-AM, to move to KCBS, a Los Angeles news station . . . . Thad Wilson is news director of KJET-AM, with a background in comedy and music-television.
