4/17/88-Swing with Sinatra on Saturday

VICTOR STREDICKE April 17, 1988 – The Frank Sinatra radio concert which you might see mentioned in national publications as an April 18 event, will air Saturday at 10 p.m. on KOMO, 1000 kHz.
“Come Swing With Me: Frank Sinatra in Concert” is being billed as Sinatra’s first radio concert in many years. The two-hour program will include a profile of the performer in addition to news of the his nationwide “Together Again” concert tour _ already through Seattle.

The program, distributed by the Mutual Broadcasting System, was recorded in October at Reunion Arena, in Dallas, before a sold-out audience.

High in the sky

KBSG’s new broadcast tower on West Tiger Mountain, near Issaquah, puts it at the top of the heap.

“K-Best has the area’s best tower location,” said Ron Erak, program director. “It’s three times as high as our previous tower.” At 3,000 feet, the K-Best tower also towers over not-so near Cougar Mountain, where many FM stations have towers topping off at 1,500 feet above sea level.

Erak is receiving reception reports from the Canadian border to south of Olympia.

Drug test of jocks

A Yakima radio station, KRSE-AM, is challenging news and programming personalities in Yakima to participate in voluntary drug testing. Rob Lowery, news director, and Dennis Gough, program director, issued the friendly challenge as an effort to increase anti-drug awareness.

Pete Fretwell, KRSE’s general manager, said he realized that some news personnel may shy away from the idea of “becoming involved in the story,” but he holds it may be the best way to indicate that media personalities are not already “part of the story.”

Twisting the dial

– “Weekend Edition” begins its chain novel, with the program which begins at 6 a.m. today on KUOW and 8 a.m. on KPLU.

– “World Talk,” two-hour national link with the Soviet Union, begins at 7 a.m. next Sunday on KOMO and KWYZ.

– Bob Robertson Sports returns as a daily three-minute feature, at 7:33 and 8:33 a.m. on KWYZ, 1230 kHz., Everett; Robertson’s reports previously appeared on KRKO.

– Disc jockeys from five of the nation’s top radio stations will appear in cameo roles in the three-part season finale of “Crime Story,” on NBC-TV in May. They are Frank Dill of San Francisco, Dale Dorman of Boston, Jonathon Brandmeier of Chicago, Ron Chapman of Dallas and John DeBella of Philadelphia.
