We used to have spelling tests. “Cat” was one of the first words I learned. Krazy Kat was a comic strip, but I knew both words were spelled wrong. How did I know? Because schools taught spelling. I couldn’t hit a baseball or throw a football but, by Gawd*, I could spell.
