The KTOY FM call letters were dropped long ago from the Tacoma radio station at 91.7 FM. KTOY FM now serves the Texarkana, TX. area. KTOY FM 104.7 plays (appropriately) rhythm & blues, which was the weekend and summertime format of the LH Bates Voc-Tech station in Tacoma. KTOY Tacoma went on the air in 1949. The station was sold to the Bible Broadcasting Network in 2015 and call letters were changed to KYFQ. Local First Media Group operates the Texarkana radio cluster. Local First also has stations in Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan (Alaska).

    Fred says:

I was a student at KTOY FM Tacoma during the ’83-’84 school year. We played top 40 during the week, went to NPR @ 3PM, when school let out. On the weekends, we were allowed to run R&B (what is now known as “hip-hop”) during the evening and overnight hours, as long as someone was willing to assume PD duties during those hours.
For years afterwards, I ran into a bunch of people who remembered “R&B’s best, in the Pacific Northwest”.
    Fun times. =)

    Lou Robbins says:

I had the opportunity to do a few hours each day during the summertime run of R&B’s Best in 1973. I had a conversation with a longtime Tacoma resident my age this past week and he remembered KTOY and the great R&B.
