KIRO afternoon drive is a one-man show

John Curley will go it alone in the afternoon drive timeslot on KIRO FM. The popular talk host can certainly carry the program without the aid of a co-host.

Afternoon co-host Shari Elliker departed KIRO Newsradio in Seattle last May as part of budget cuts at the Bonneville station. New co-host Jake Skorheim joined Curley and the subject of Elliker’s dismissal was addressed by Curley. “Shari is no longer the co-host. Jake comes in. There’s other people that are not going to be part of this show and part of the station. It’s the finances of the whole thing,” Curley said. “That happens when sales are down or people aren’t spending as much and the economy’s sort of in the shaky spot. So they look at it and they say, ‘Well, how much money do we have? Where can we spread the money around? Who are we going to keep or not keep?’ And that’s what happened.” Shari Elliker had joined KIRO in December 2021 after a long career in markets like Washington D.C. and Baltimore.

Jake & Spike hold down the 12-3 slot on KIRO and there are no changes in the Dave Ross and Gee & Ursala shows at KIRO FM.

Do the Seattle tv stations not already have enough meteorologists on staff to cover the newscasts? There always seem to be new faces. Relax! Theron Zahn is back on KOMO 4 weekend newscasts.

We are still awaiting the bio for meteorologist Stella Sun. Stella started her first week at KOMO on the morning news with Lee Stoll at the news desk in the 6-7 and 8-9 news breaks. As for the bio on the KOMO website, we may not see it anytime soon. The KOMO website is not well-maintained.

  • I've always liked O'Neill, and he definitely has the time served in the market.

Not liking the pairing with Skorheim, and never thought he carried the night show very well. A lot of repeated themes and content, no real depth or strength in his takes. I don't need to agree with a host, just entertain me and be good at the craft of radio, be sure of yourself and have some depth.

Curley is one of the last "real" showmen. And to think, when he joined KIRO years ago, they didn't quite know where he fit. But it worked out for him, and it's one of the strongest things KIRO has left.

  • The 9-3 programming is not good. I can no longer listen. Curley I'll listen to, but I miss the co-host. 🫤

    • 9am-Noon and Noon-3pm -- KIRO could go back to playing MOR (Sinatra and Streisand -- the format they had before the station went to an all-news format 50 years ago)

  • Stine, with his egotistical, condescending attitude, mocking anyone he disagreed with...dunno, maybe it was money. Stations are cutting expenses, so...
