New for 2025: KIRO 7 News presents Dialing For Dollars

It’s time…
I have complained here about KIRO 7 running ads for gadgets QVC-style during a newscast. Now, KIRO 7 and the other COX stations nation-wide are running a full-fledged “Secret Word” contest during select newscasts.

It’s time!
KIRO 7 is not a cable news network and is not running live newscasts 24/7. Many of the morning, midday and nightly newscasts are re-run online, available at the viewers convenience.

It’s TIME!!!
It is time to cutback to four 30-minute newscasts per day. After each is aired live on KIRO 7, these can be streamed online constantly. With this model, KIRO 7 cuts personnel, which corporations love to do this time of year. Viewers will still get the news from KIRO 7 online at any hour. Believe me, the viewers won’t give a damn that they are watching the Noon or 5 p.m. newscast at 8 p.m. on their phone. Rabid news hounds are not getting their news from TV anyway.

The sales gimmick and the contests have got to stop!

Otherwise, let’s just go all the way. Let your imagination run wild. The circus is in town at 5 a.m., 12 noon, 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. Get a few of the radio DJs to do the TV news. Bob Rivers can host the 5 p.m. show, bring in Taryn Daly from KISW to do the weather, Migs has sports at 5 and 11. The clever producers will handle the sound effects and BJ Shea can give a daily editorial during the 5 p.m. show.

Contest details at MEDIA MAVEN. Wayne Lynch watches the TV news so the rest of us don’t have to.

  1. Well why don’t you give KJR and I heart media hell for running a contest that’s for all their stations Nationwide you’re giving Cairo a bunch of crap but I don’t see you say anything about KJR and I heart media having the Nationwide ones

    1. Radio contests have been run forever. National contests have been the thing since corporates such as iHeart took over the airwaves.
You CANNOT compare radio contests to TV NEWS contests. TV NEWS should NOT be running contests period.
If you don’t like the odds of a radio station’s national contest, go buy a lottery ticket.
If you are like many of us– you don’t trust the local media any longer and are turned off by the contests being run during newscasts– you have turned off KOMO 4, KING 5, KIRO 7.
When KCPQ 13 runs a contest– that’s the nail in the coffin for Seattle TV NEWS.
