    John Fortmeyer says:

I was editor of the Anacortes American newspaper from 1978 to 1985. I didn’t know that a Portland resident was the original owner of KAGT, but the station at some point was sold to Bill Berry, who owned the station when I lived there. I understand that Bill previously worked at KING-TV.

    Dick Ellingson says:

I used to listen on my bedroom radio every Sunday afternoon to KBRC in the early- and mid-fifties when I was in junior high. It came in just like a local at our house on East 90th St. off Roosevelt Way in North Seattle. The elevation was just over 500 feet, the second highest hill in Seattle.

Its legal on-the-hour I. D. was “KBRC near Mount Vernon”. I always wondered if any other station had an I. D. like that.

      John Fortmeyer says:

By the way, Dick, I have often wondered why that hill we grew up on doesn’t have an official name. Where our house was on 94th, it is one of the steepest streets in Seattle.

      John Fortmeyer says:

Dick, I grew up just a few blocks from your location in north Seattle., in what is now described as the Maple Leaf neighborhood. In 1963, when I was 7, we moved into a brand new house at 1528 NE 94th St. So I am very familiar with that North Roosevelt business area. I attended Sacajawea Elementary school, which opened in 1959, then Jane Addams Junior High then Nathan Hale High, which opened in 1964. If we had lived just a few blocks west I likely would have attended Olympic View Elementary, John Marshall Junior High and Roosevelt High.

    William Engelhardt says:

John is correct — Before KAGT (later KLKI), Bill Berry was an account executive at KING-TV.
And brought with him to Anacortes, pioneer sportscaster and former KING colleague Bill O’Mara, who did play-by-play broadcasts on the station till he was 90.
