    Jason Remington says:

When Maynard left KJR, he was temporarily replaced by a utility announcer, Dudley. Dudley had been at KTAC previously and I was a fan. I thought he was pretty cool. So, the first night that Dudley went on the air at KJR, and I don’t remember if this was on the shift to cover in Maynard’s absence or some other night, I happened to be listening. I thought it was kind of neat to be able to hear Dudley again and that he had made it to major-league radio KJR. So, Dudley comes on, in his first stop-set and introduces himself as “Dudley….on 85 KTAC.” I just about died, and he probably crawled under the console after that flub.

    John Ross says:

Maynard is in a class all to himself! Funny stuff. Rick Hansen was my PD at KNBQ 97.3 FM (Tribune Publishing Company) in the mid 80’s, before it was bought out by Viacom. I, along with Chet Rogers on news, were teamed-up for morning drive under the new call-sign KBSG Oldies 97.3 FM.

Maynard mentions KUUU where I’d been doing 7 to Midnight… while he was doing the all-nighter at KJR. I think it was late 1972 that I ‘borrowed’ KUUU’s front desk receptionist, Rosemary Smith, this blonde, vivacious bombshell, to accompany me on a Hughes 300 helicopter from Boeing Field to ‘air-mail special delivery’ my air-check to Pat O’Day at the KJR studios on Harbor Island in West Seattle. Norm Gregory was on the air as we landed in a cloud of dust. Vivian, Pat’s personal secretary had been keeping me posted when Pat would be at the station. They were in the middle of a staff meeting about 4PM in the afternoon. Pat’s convertible Cadillac was sitting in the parking lot – not good. Anyway, we landed, Rosemary jumped out, decked out in hot-pants and cowboy boots, ran over to O’Day and gave him a kiss on the cheek and my air-check, then we blasted off back to Boeing Field. That Friday evening when I showed-up for my shift, PD ‘Gary Loving’ (Gary Spinnell) was waiting for me. He’d gotten a call from Norm Gregory. I was fired for ’embarrassing’ the station (KUUU). The next week I was featured on the front cover of The Bob Hamilton Radio Report with the helicopter and the next day was hired by Jim Tinker as the PD and PM Driver at KPUG 1170-AM Bellingham, where Randy Evans was exiting, headed for KJR sister station KJRB in Spokane. Randy became “Ichabod Caine” a few years later to replace Charlie Brown for the morning show at KJR. I think it was JJ Jackson who got Maynard’s all-night shift at KJR, since the FCC required minority hiring quotas back then. Oh well, it was all FUN!

And now you know a little more about the story…
