Commemorating KCBQ San Diego, honoring the many personalities

A monument to the original KCBQ, which was influential in popularizing the Top 40 music format for the rest of the nation, now stands at the radio station’s old Santee transmitter site. It was dedicated on August 28, 2010. You can find the monument on Mission Gorge Road just east of Carlton Hills Boulevard, in front of an In-N-Out Burger fast food restaurant. Dex Allen (KOL), POA (KOL), Bill Gardner (KING), Tom Murphy (KJR and KOL), Bob Shannon (KJR), China Smith (KING), Danny Wright (KJR), Bob Hudson (KKMI)

    Bill Gardner (KING) also worked at KOOL/Phoenix. Tony Evans and Steve Goddard also moved on to Phoenix stations.

    KGB San Diego was a Drake station, the favorite of my neice who was growing up in San Diego in the 1960s/1970s. I’m sure she sampled KCBQ, the station that hired away nearly the entire KGB staff in 1971.
