ART BELL
Art Bell was an American radio broadcaster, author, and conspiracy theorist, best known for hosting the late-night talk show Coast to Coast AM, which focused on paranormal phenomena, UFOs, and fringe topics. Born Arthur William Bell III on June 17, 1945, in Jacksonville, North Carolina, he grew up in a military family and developed an early interest in radio, earning his amateur radio license at age 13. His broadcasting career began in the 1960s, including stints as a disc jockey and work in Armed Forces Radio during the Vietnam War era.
Bell created and hosted Coast to Coast AM starting in 1988, initially as a political talk show called West Coast AM out of Las Vegas, Nevada. By the early 1990s, it shifted to cover the paranormal, including topics like UFOs, time travel, near-death experiences, and government conspiracies. The show, syndicated by Premiere Networks, became a cultural phenomenon, peaking with over 10 million listeners across hundreds of stations. Bell’s open-minded interviewing style, distinctive voice, and willingness to entertain bizarre claims without judgment made him a beloved figure among fans of the unusual. Notable moments include his 1997 interview with a frantic caller claiming to be an Area 51 employee (later revealed as a hoax) and discussions with figures like Malachi Martin on exorcisms.
He retired multiple times (2000, 2002, 2003, and 2013) due to personal reasons, including family tragedies, but briefly returned with shows like Midnight in the Desert (2015). Bell authored books like The Quickening (1997), exploring societal changes and conspiracies. His personal life included five marriages, with his final wife, Airyn Ruiz, whom he married in 2006 after meeting online. Bell was a polarizing figure—admired for his storytelling but criticized for promoting unverified claims, like those about the Hale-Bopp comet in 1997, which some linked to the Heaven’s Gate cult tragedy, though he denied responsibility.
Bell died on April 13, 2018, at age 72 in Pahrump, Nevada, from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complications. His legacy endures through Coast to Coast AM, still hosted by George Noory, and a loyal fanbase.
