ED "SAM" HAWKINS was a friendly voice that I enjoyed listening to.
I worked at KMPS with Art. He was a nice guy, the first midday jock on KMPS, and he'd been around. He should have been morning man, but Hercules brought Rick Stewart in from KRAK Sacramento for a short stint as PD/AM Drive. Art was warm, friendly, homespun, not afraid of an occasional cornball joke, talked on the air about his wife June and kept things moving. I was doing weekends and fill-in and, whenever we crossed paths, he always said, "When are they gonna bring you over on dayside?" and throw in that the two holdover KOL egos, Mike O'Connor (Hamilton) and Roger Dale (Pedersen), should be bounced. Mike and Roger believed themselves a cut above and just too too good for country.
