CBS2 News Boise on Tuesday confirmed longtime Chief Meteorologist Roland Steadham was one of two people killed in a small plane crash onto the Payette River near Black Canyon.

“The thoughts and prayers from all of us at CBS2 are with Roland’s family, friends, and flying community,” the station wrote online. “We also send our condolences to the family of the other person who died in the plane crash today.”

The Gem County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the crash occurred around 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, after the aircraft clipped a power line and plunged into the icy river. Authorities have not yet released the other man’s identity.

Roland attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah, and finished his education through the Mississippi State Meteorology Program, according to CBS2. Steadham has spent over three decades as a meteorologist, from forecasting severe hurricanes in Florida to spending time in Utah, according to his station biography.

“His experience ranging from tropical weather to blizzards makes him qualified to be the Chief Meteorologist for KBOI 2 News,” Steadham’s bio reads. “After working from coast to coast, he and his family have decided that there is no place like the west with Boise being the highlight of his career.”
