Fred Latremouille (1945–2015) was a beloved Canadian broadcaster, renowned as a “broadcaster’s broadcaster” for his exceptional ability to connect with audiences across radio, television, and beyond.

Born on October 21, 1945, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, he grew up in Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver, where his father served as director of CBC Radio. He attended West Vancouver High School and later Kitsilano High School.

Latremouille launched his remarkable career remarkably early. At just 16 years old and still in Grade 11, he took his first broadcasting job in 1961 at CKYL, a country-and-western station in Peace River, Alberta. There, he read news and hosted a morning show. The station manager briefly suggested shortening his name to Fred Lane for on-air ease, but he soon reverted to Fred Latremouille—a name that would become iconic in Western Canadian media for over four decades.

Returning to Vancouver in 1962, he joined CJOR-AM, hosting the drive-home show until 1964. During this period, he became the first local DJ to air The Beatles and the emerging Motown sound, helping introduce fresh music trends to listeners. After a short stint at CFUN in 1964–1965 (following a disagreement with program director Red Robinson, who later became a close friend), he briefly worked at CFAX in Victoria before landing at CKLG Vancouver from 1965 to 1967. He then stepped away from radio temporarily to co-edit the Georgia Straight magazine but returned to the airwaves in the early 1970s as morning host at CFUN.

Latremouille’s charisma extended to television. From 1964 to 1966, he hosted CBC Vancouver’s Let’s Go. In 1968, he fronted another CBC series, New Sounds, and in the 1970s, he presented the Hourglass news package. He served as weatherman for BCTV (CTV’s Vancouver affiliate) and hosted their Dance Party show. In summer 1977, he led Fred and Friends, part of CBC’s Summer Of… series. He also appeared in films during the late 1970s and early 1980s, including A Man, a Woman and a Bank, The Plutonium Incident, The Changeling, and Jane Doe.

In 1984, he returned to CFUN for mornings, initially teaming with Cathy Baldazzi (handling traffic and news). Their chemistry grew, evolving the show into the popular Fred and Cathy program. The duo married in 1987 and continued together at CFUN until 1993, when they moved to KISS-FM (CKKS-FM) for a successful seven-year run with Latremornings.

After retiring briefly and splitting time between Vancouver and Maui, Hawaii, they resumed work in 2006. On September 5, 2006, they launched a revived Latremornings on Clear-FM (CKCL-FM), which had shifted to an Adult Contemporary format. The show quickly recaptured their loyal following. In November 2007, after just over a year, they retired permanently, returning to their Hawaiian retreat.

Fred Latremouille passed away on March 5, 2015, at age 69 after a brief illness.
