January 20th 1985 – Bruce Murdock, on air personality at KLSY was congratulated for increasing women listeners on his weekday morning show from 5.8 to an 11 share, “Double digits, nice work Bruce,” said Dana Horner, general manager of the station. A dozen similar exaltations followed as Horner extracted printed information from a computer bank containing advance results of fall listening patterns in the metro area: Seattle, Tacoma, Everett. KLSY staffers were first in the city to get fall 1984 rating information, by buying Arbitron computer access from the Arbitron ratings company, a nationwide firm specializing in radio ratings. Radio stations use the Arbitron to set rates for commercials and sell time to advertisers. With humility, Murdock absorbed the information that KUBE’s Charlie Brown lead with women 18 to 49 a 12.4 share over Murdoch’s 11 and a 16.3 share over Murdock’s 14.8 for women 18 to 34.
January 27th 1985 – Nostalgia comes to the battlefield, as KIXI AM climbs in the ratings with its blend of big band and contemporary music. A second big band format has appeared in the form of the new KARR 1460 which signed on in December with a syndicated music package called The Music of Your Life. Standard fare includes big band music and vocalists such as Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee and Andy Williams. KARR previously was KGAA.
