6/1987–Curtis annointed PD of KVI

June 1987 –If you stand in line long enough, you’re bound to get a second ticket. Dick Curtis, morning personality, has been named program director at KVI, 570 kHz. He replaces Mike Webb, who held the job a year and will continue with an afternoon air shift and music-director duties. Curtis was a program director and station manager in the 1960s.

He left the broadcasting business in the ’70s to become a concert promoter, but he re-emerged in 1983, first as a broadcast-school manager, then as an on-air personality at KKMI and KVI.

“This is somewhat of a surprise, but I have missed management,” Curtis said, adding that KVI listeners should notice no changes, although the station will be more visible in the community.

INTERNATIONAL BROADCAST

The “Morning Show” originates from France all this week, 5:30 to 10 a.m. on KOMO, 1000 kHz. Larry Nelson anchors the week, beginning with three days of broadcasts from the Eiffel Tower.

Earlier, KOMO traffic pilot Ted Potter had staged a polar flight to Paris, so he’ll be a guest. And Patti Payne, the only French-speaking KOMO staffer, who led a tour of KOMO listeners, will appear, along with French celebrities lined up with the assistance of Pierre Salinger. Salinger, international bon vivant, is chief of ABC’s Paris bureau.

On Thursday and Friday, Nelson and crew will broadcast from the U.S.A. Pavilion at the Paris Air Show.

TWISTING THE DIAL

– Competing applicants for the new Everett FM frequency are the Jack Straw Memorial Foundation, former operators of KRAB; and the Nathan Educational Broadcasting Foundation, a non-profit California organization. The non-commercial frequency was opened in 1984; both companies applied for the dial space then, but the Federal Communications Commission has waited until now to begin evaluating the applications.

– Frank Shires has transferred from KMGI to KLTX, 95.7 mHz, and will work the same evening shift, 7 to midnight, including a “Moonlight and Memories” segment after 9 p.m. . . . Bob Brooks is the new midday personality at KLSY-AM-FM; he had been temporarily filling the slot the past three months . . . J. Lawrence of KLTX is off to California, which allows Mark Christopher _ the perennial candidate for any opening at KLTX _ to take the midday spot.
