And here is a look back to a few of Victor Stredicke’s columns from 1986 (excerpts) … JUNE 22, 1986 – The Sunday night “Album Review” on KMPS becomes “The Compact Disc Review”. “Country music has lagged behind jazz and classical in digital presentation,” Jim Williams, KMPS music director, said. “But I anticipate that by 1987, most major album releases by country music artists will be available on compact disc.” … Brad Behan, news director at KQKT, has moved to Washington, D.C., where he will be AP Radio’s afternoon news anchor. Lyn Perry, Traffic reporter, replaces Behan as morning news announcer at KQKT. The pop station, KQ96, places its news on the half hour during George Lindsay’s “Morning Madness” show from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. weekdays…New general manager at Bailie School of Broadcast in Seattle is Doug Hicks, a former general manager of KWWA-KBRO, Bremerton…”Mr. Know-It-All,” a one-minute feature from Tony Miner, is broadcast weekdays on KZOK 102.5…Mad Man Moskowitz is back, 8 p.m. Sundays on KRPM-AM 770, with seldom-heard, often-forgotten records of the past 60 years. After the first hour of comedy material, Moskowitz follows with two hours of classic country tunes…John Ross, formerly with KHIT, has joined KMGI as morning newsman and traffic reporter…Alan Dale, previously a weekender and part-time announcer at KNBQ and KUBE, has taken the evening shift at KQKT 96.5.
AUGUST 17, 1986 – Carl Dombek and Mike Dewey continue midday coverage of the International Air Fair in Everett, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today on KING-AM 1090…The Sunday morning Rock & Roll Time Machine has added a Saturday edition, 9 a.m. to noon on KZOK 102.5…Jim Rondeau and Marc Bryan, who came together for a weekend shift at KRFE, Everett, left for school in eastern Washington and intend to stay together as a radio team…Bill Fitzhugh is new host of “Get Back,” Saturday-night nostalgia show on KQIN 820. He replaces Steve Ward, who resigned in favor of his regular full-time job…Vickie Frederick, previously on KZOK and other stations, is weekend announcer at KQIN 820…

“I anchored mornings at KCLU for 12 years and grew up wanting to be on KIRO in Seattle, so it’s really a kick to do KNX,” wrote Jim. “It’s unbelievable how many people in L.A. depend on that station. They’ve got an A-team in place, so I just fill in some holes once or twice a week. They’re real pros when news starts to break!

There are great things happening at KSBR that I’m sticking around for. New radio and tv studios being built, fundraising is up and working on an interference mitigation plan with KCSN to clean up 88.5.

I love public radio and working with future broadcasters at Saddleback College, so it’s the best of both worlds. Yes, it sounds like one of those phony press release quotes, but I’m incredibly thankful for all the opportunity.”
