KXA in New Package

KXA (770 kc) has changed, but only the package, not the content. Still adult oriented and on during daytime hours the station offers in-depth news broadcasts and modern versions of all time popular music.
Unlike most independent stations, KXA now presents five one-half-hour news programs a day, at 7 and 8 a.m., noon and 4 and 5 p.m. Don Riggs and Lloyd Allen present local news and world headlines. World wide correspondents of United Press International Audio Service provide on the spot coverage of national and international events.
The sound of the music has changed, modern versions of old favorites are included with Broadway hits and film music classics. Morning and afternoon traffic hours have brightly paced music with the softer sound during midday.
A full hour of concert music daily from 9 to 10 a.m. with the KXA Sunday Symphony from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday completes the format.
PUSHING THE BUTTONS:
KOL (1300 kc) announced several staff changes recently. Dick Curtis joins the station as program director and on-air personality from 4-8 p.m. Gary Todd takes over the 6-9 a.m. spot. Jeff Boeing joins KOL from CHUM in Toronto hosting the noon-4 p.m. segment. Bobby Simon is the mid-morning voice, 9-noon. Gary Todd also will become station promotion director.
Metropolitan Opera broadcasts again will be heard in Seattle on KGDN (630 kc) and KGFM (105.3 mc) every Saturday live from the stage of the Opera House in New York City. Rudolf Bing also returns with “Opera News on the Air,” during the first intermission Bing will describe the operas and singers to be heard. Francis Robinson will offer his “Biographies in Music” and Elward Downes will quiz experts on the operas. (Bob) Cram’s Telephone Ski Show on KING (1090 kc) will be heard every Thursday from 8:12 to 9 a.m throughout ski season. Enthusiasts are invited to phone in questions, complaints, tips and suggestions. Guests will discuss ski fashion, styles, equipment, techniques and ski areas, favorite runs and ski safety.

Victor Stredicke

Victor Stredicke is a longtime figure in Seattle-area media, best known as the former radio-TV editor for The Seattle Times. He wrote a dedicated column covering local and regional radio broadcasting, including station changes, programming, personalities, controversies, and industry news. In 2023, Victor Stredicke was honored at the Radio Conference Call meet-up for his longtime contributions as a newspaper radio-TV columnist, with appreciation from readers and people he had covered.

***P-I was a little late on its KOL update: Gary Todd and Dick Curtis joined KOL in October, preceded by "Jeff Boeing." Bringing Dick Haase (Jack Hayes at CHUM) to KOL as Jeff Boeing was manager Bob Cooper's idea. For a couple weeks before our new DJ's arrival, stentorian announcements voiced by Bill Munson were aired once an hour asserting that "KOL has acquired Boeing."
