Popular local country music artists – radio, tv and live

Some good times growing up were the radio remote broadcasts around the area. These store openings and weekend sales extravaganzas at the B&I Circus Store, or for a car dealership, featured local radio personalities and country music bands. KMO did quite a few of these, even a couple outdoor mini-concerts outside the KMO studio in Fife. These were the lacal country music entertainers that would open for major artists like Don Gibson and Freddie Hart. Among the more popular local country performers were Chubby Howard & Grover Jackson who had the radio show on KMO 1360, KAYE 1450 and KTVW 13, and Jack Roberts & the Evergreen Drifters. If the Evergreen Drifters were appearing, that was a hot ticket! If it was a free performance for a promotional event, Dad loaded us into the car and we were on our way.

I recall seeing four of these performances with my parents. My Dad drove out to one at the “Roy Y” one cloudy Saturday and on the way home he punched up KAYO 1150 on the car radio. Dad was in control of that radio and the choices were KAYO-KMO-KIRO, that was it.
Jack Roberts was not only a performer but also a promoter, bringing major artists to town, like Hank Thompson & Conway Twitty.
