Sinclair and its subsidiary, ONE Media Technologies, hosted another in a continuing series of ATSC 3.0 device interoperability trials this week. Among the nerdy hijinks, the performance of a “BEST” (Broadcast-Enabled Streaming Television) channel feature whereby an over-the-air signaled channel is delivered via a broadband connection.
BEST, or Broadcast-Enabled Streaming Television, is a concept that integrates traditional broadcast television with streaming technology to deliver enhanced viewing experiences. It combines the reliability and wide reach of broadcast signals with the interactivity and on-demand capabilities of internet streaming.
BEST utilizes over-the-air (OTA) broadcast signals (like ATSC 3.0, also known as NextGen TV) to deliver core content, ensuring broad accessibility, even in areas with limited internet. It complements this with internet-based streaming for additional features like on-demand content, interactive apps, or personalized ads.
BEST supports high-definition video (up to 4K), HDR (High Dynamic Range), and advanced audio (e.g., Dolby Atmos) via modern broadcast standards.
Streaming allows for adaptive bitrate, adjusting quality based on internet speed. Plus, viewers can access extra content (e.g., alternate camera angles, stats, or behind-the-scenes footage) through internet-connected devices. Streaming components require a broadband connection for full functionality.
Live & Local: Live events (sports, news) with real-time stats or replays via streaming. Local content distribution combined with global streaming options.
ATSC 3.0 is a next-generation broadcast standard that supports internet protocol (IP) integration, allowing seamless blending of broadcast and broadband content. These streams would be viewable on devices, such as Smart TVs, set-top boxes, or mobile devices equipped to receive both OTA signals and internet streams. The internet component makes BEST flexible and extensible beyond local broadcast ranges.
We won’t get into the deep end of the technology behind BEST, suffice to say there would be many benefits to the local tv brand and the consumer, with wider reach (universal access) and personalization.
BEST is part of the evolving TV landscape, aiming to bridge traditional media with modern, interactive streaming for a richer, more flexible viewer experience. It’s particularly tied to advancements like NextGen TV, which is rolling out in various regions as of 2025.
PARAMOUNT GLOBAL chair Shari Redstone was diagnosed with thyroid cancer earlier this spring, a spokesperson for Redstone said in a statement to Reuters on Thursday.
After feeling fatigue and other symptoms, Redstone sought medical help about two months ago and was diagnosed with thyroid cancer the next day. Surgeons removed her thyroid gland, but some cancer cells remained as they had spread to her vocal cords. Redstone kept her diagnosis private, sharing it with only a tight circle of relatives, close friends, and advisers including David Ellison, the Skydance head and tech heir, whose company is set to purchase Paramount and the Redstone family’s stake, NYT reported.
