Note what seems like an odd start time for the late night news on a west coast network affiliate. In 1959, regular network programming had ended prior to 10 pm and local stations ran their news at 10. KOMO 4 was the NBC affiliate at the time and Jack Paar was broadcast at 10:30 on the west coast. Channel 5, the ABC affiliate, ran the local news at 10:30, followed by a movie. This was the time before the Joey Bishop show came on the scene, before ABC took the plunge into late night variety television. By that time, KOMO and KING had switched networks, KOMO becoming the ABC affiliate and KING the NBC station for Seattle.

In the 1990s I was a reporter at the daily newspaper in Astoria, and I had occasion to interview Ted by phone when he was working at Oregon Public Broadcasting (after his stints at KATU and KOIN). He was momentarily struck speechless by just how many years had passed when I told him that when I was a kid growing up in Seattle in the 1960s, I watched him often at 11 p.m. doing "The World Today" newscast on KING-TV. I also told him that my mom, a waitress, had served him several times at the old Hippopotamus restaurant near the Channel 5 studios.
Another time, longtime children's TV host "Brakeman Bill" McLain dropped by the Astoria newspaper when he was doing public relations for Channel 11, which at the time was carried on the cable system there. I told him that I met him when I was only 4 years old and he was appearing at the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma.
It was fun to interact with two of my childhood TV legends because of my work at that newspaper. ... :-)
You're correct, John. While at KTNT-TV, among Ted's on-air assignments was co-hosting a noontime "homemakers" show with Peg Carpenter. After KING, and before heading to KATU-TV, and later KOIN-TV (Portland), Ted anchored morning drive newscasts for a time at KJR.
I think I read that Ted Bryant got his start in TV at KTNT Channel 11 before going to Channel 5. Is that right? As a kid I saw him regularly on 5, but apparently I was too young to have seen him on 11.
