KIRO Radio has partnered with FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to provide improved communications facilities and capabilities in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency.
The AM transmitter’s location is on Vashon Island. In the event of an emergency, the Coast Guard would meet the KIRO broadcasters in Seattle and rush them to the transmitter site. A ribbon-cutting ceremony takes place this morning, November 19, 2021. Bonneville leadership and FEMA officials will be on hand to honor decades of working together, as well as to dedicate new and improved communications facilities at the transmitter site, which has served KIRO-AM listeners for more than 80 years.
The site might withstand a nuclear blast, has stand-by power generation facilities and enough food and water (for two people) to last a period of sixty days.
In case of a national emergency, all Puget Sound radio stations might carry the KIRO signal. (KIRO Radio/MyNorthwest.com)
