Dick Ellingson says:
Regarding tonight’s veep debate, can we drop the phrase, “first and only” from the lexicon? I think most of us can agree that an “only” occurrence of anything is probably not the second or third occurrence.
And that was one big fly grazing in the grey hairs of Mike Pence. On my little bitty 28 inch computer screen clear across the room, I could see it pacing back and forth like a juror weighing the evidence.

A. Zero
B. More than zero

RERUNS – As opposed to today’s tv-on-demand, the rerun was the only way we could re-watch an earlier tv show. Usually, a TV Guide with listings of mostly reruns was tossed onto the coffee table in disgust. Though we had reruns, our schedules didn’t always allow us to catch up. Now, forty or fifty years after, we can re-watch an entire series at a time most convenient to us.
I am rediscovering Perry Mason, after watching the HBO series. I prefer the original series, starring Raymond Burr. One reason for a new appreciation of old classics may be the absence of commercials.

Especially since NBC Radio News hasn’t been owned by NBC since 1987. It belongs to I-Harm Radio now. They broadcast nonstop all hour long like AP Radio. Everything repeats itself every 10 or 12 minutes. I wouldn’t call the announcers quite network quality.
ABC and CBS still have reputable radio news utilizing all their network news resources. I enjoy listening to KMMR Malta, live radio with mostly classic rock and a tiny bit of country, high school sports, and the full five minutes of ABC News every hour on the hour. Local news and local sponsors. Good easy-going deejays. Real time checks and weather too.

Legendary major league hurler Tom Seaver, known as “Tom Terrific” and “The Franchise” during his playing days, died Monday, August 31 after battling dementia and COVID-19. He was 75.
Seaver passed away at his home in Calistoga, California, according to the Baseball Hall of Fame, where he was inducted on the first ballot in 1992.
Seaver was a part of the legendary “Miracle Mets” of 1969, which went on to win the World Series over the Baltimore Orioles. He played in the majors from 1968 to 1986 and was a 13-time All-Star and 3-time Cy Young winner.
Seaver went public about his dementia diagnosis in 2019 and announced that he would “retire from public life.”
One of the greatest to ever wear a Mets jersey, Seaver had his No. 41 jersey retired in 1988. He also played for the Reds, White Sox and Red Sox, winning 311 games against 205 losses.
The media angle: After he retired from baseball, Seaver went into broadcasting as a Yankees analyst on WPIX from 1989 to 1993 and on Mets telecasts from 1999 to 2005.

Tech support has yet to respond with a solution to the case of the four years of missing comments.
I remotely accessed the database Friday afternoon and downloaded the comment files into a Word document. There were just over 45 Thousand pages of code and text.
There were no comments prior to May 15, 2020 in the database. — How the previous comments were lost remains a mystery, and it seems unlikely tech support can perform a miracle.
Comment posting is working fine right now.
I don’t know that a backup of the website from an earlier date will do the trick. We may just be snakebit.
It’s a shame!

UPDATE — DAY 3 (8/21/2020)
Again, the situation was explained with a walk-thru, step by step, and I think the tech may have understood the situation this time.
The situation has been escalated (!!!!!).
…………………………………………………………………………
8/20/2020 — We have determined that ALL COMMENTS prior to May 15, 2020, were lost in a database “dump” which seems to have occurred only recently. ( 4 years worth of comments )
I have been online with tech support the past two days. Most of that time was spent trying to get through the language barrier. I walked the techs through the problem, step by step. Along the way, they tried to throw simple explanations at me, none of which applied. My understanding of WordPress etc. goes beyond simple tutorials. We have had to work through many issues since this blog went online, but nothing this dire.
Late this afternoon, I impressed upon the rep that this matter needed to be escalated, preferably to someone that spoke English, had knowledge of WordPress and real technical background, in order to deal with database issues.
I will be on the phone Friday, for as long as it takes, to come to some conclusion regarding this. The call is scheduled for the morning.
Hopefully, I will have good news by the end of the day. As I have stated, these COMMENTS hold great historical data. It would be a shame to lose any of that.
Qualified techs can move all the data of this website to another web hosting company, without spilling a bite of data. So, the misplaced comments that are sitting in a database, can be restored, with the help of a qualified tech.
Please stand by!
August 21, 2020 at QZVX
Steven Smith says:
Good luck on that Jason. You are correct, you have been dealing with this long enough that you are able to wrestle your way thru WordPress tech issues with more skill than most of us who end up pulling our hair out sometimes.

Dick…you are correct. We have comments from many notables within the site…Tom Murphy, Chuck Buell, Pat O’Day and his family, family of Jim Harriott and many others. Some of the information provided by those people really fleshes out our stories and many of us, as authors and editors, have made corrections based on a reader who left a comment and knew inside info we did not. I look forward to getting the comments back. I wish word press admins would quit messing around, changing things so things that work great at the site are suddenly out of whack until their techies can figure out “why this change led to that problem.”
August 21, 2020 at QZVX
Jason Remington says:
Steve & Dick,
All true! So much to lose if they don’t have the knowledge needed in order to save this material. Seems to me to be doable. I have had some great interactions with tech support in the past, helping to pull the rabbit out of the hat.
We do have backups of this site, I just don’t have an exact date for when this crash happened, but they should be able to figure that out. I would say there are thousands of messages hanging in the balance.
August 20, 2020 at QZVX
Dick Ellingson says:
I came to that same conclusion, and you’re right, the comments are the meat.
Cebu, Manila or Quezon City? Nice people, but they’re simply reading a script.
I had a two-hour session in June with a Microsoft tech in Manila. She was very well-spoken and very knowledgeable and she solved my problem. But I had to constantly ask her to repeat herself because of her accent.
I wish you well.

SONGS THAT NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED:
I will start.
JET by Paul McCartney. The lyrics make no sense.
Jet, Jet,
Jet, I can almost remember their funny faces
That time you told them that you were going to be marrying soon
And jet I thought the only lonely place was on the moon
Jet Jet Jet
Jet was your father as bold as the sergeant major
How come he told you that you were hardly old enough yet
And jet I thought the major was a lady suffragette
Jet Jet Jet
Ah Mater want Jet to always love me
Ah Mater want Jet to always love me
Ah Mater… much later
Jet
And Jet I thought the major was a lady suffragette
Jet Jet
Ah Mater want Jet to always love me
Ah Mater want Jet to always love me
Ah Mater… much later
Jet with the wind in your hair
Of a thousand laces
Climb on the back and we’ll go for a ride in the sky
And Jet I thought that the major was a little lady suffragette
Jet-Jet-Jet
And Jet you know I thought you was a little lady suffragette
Jet
A little lady
My little lady… yes

Around the 4800 block of East Valley Highway East in Sumner is an old commercial building that has radio station call letters mounted on the outside. Unfortunately, it’s so overgrown with blackberries and brambles you can only see it in the winter.

Thanks.

July 16, 2020 at QZVX

If you have a crypto account, you can send funds to another person’s crypto account. Those funds recieved are not subject to exchange fees. The funds can be cashed out by the receiver.
Chainlink is one form of crypto currency, like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple ( I know your first thought is WINE, but NO), Litecoin, etc. Chainlink is currently a hot one, moving up, up, up in value. Crypto currency can be purchased and sold like stock, but without the associated fees in many cases.

In the late 1950’s, the Sunday Seattle Times used to include out-of-town tv listings within the news section, not within the tv section. Do I remember a listing for Ephrata? Was it actually on the air, or was this a cable only station?

RDVegas – You have a good memory! The station listed was KBAS-TV channel 43 Ephrata which was essentially a repeater of KIMA-TV channel 29 Yakima which, by the late 1950’s was a dual CBS & ABC affiliate. Both stations at that time were owned by KXLY-TV channel 4 Spokane. KBAS-TV left the air in the early 1960’s & was eventually replace by a lower powered translator for KXLY-TV

Bill Small, who made CBS news a powerhouse in the 1960s and the 1970s, has died.
Small served as the network’s Washington Bureau Chief from 1962 to 1974 and brought together a team of journalists that would go on to dominate political coverage throughout the turbulent time of the Vietnam War and Watergate.
The roster included veteran reporters recruited from within CBS: Marvin Kalb, Dan Rather, Harry Reasoner, Dan Schorr and Eric Sevareid.
