At KOIN, Gianola has anchored evening newscasts and hosted “Wednesday’s Child,” a segment credited with placing hundreds of foster children in adoptive homes, earning him significant recognition. He founded the Wednesday’s Child Foundation to support foster children with opportunities like camps and sports. His reporting includes impactful series like “Unsheltered Truth” (2018) on Portland’s homeless crisis and a 1990s project living on the streets to highlight homelessness. Gianola has won multiple Emmy Awards, including Best Anchor in the Pacific Northwest, and was inducted into the Northwest Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Silver Circle for over 25 years of contributions to local news.
Gianola has also appeared as a TV reporter in films like The Hunted (2003) and Birddog (1999). He hosted KOIN’s short-lived lifestyle show “Quick Tips for Easy Living” in 1999 and CBS Weekend News in 2020 during the pandemic.
Gianola has been open about his struggle with Meniere’s disease, which caused profound hearing loss, and shared his journey in a 2025 KOIN report after visiting Tucker Maxon School for hearing-impaired children. “I first began to go deaf several years ago when I developed Meniere’s disease, which damaged my inner ear and affected my ability to hear.” (KOIN 6)
