1965 – Pat O’Day on the state of rock ‘n’ roll

In a 1965 Post-Intelligencer poll, Seattle viewers voted “The Lawrence Welk Show” #1 for tv entertainment.

Notes On The Hits
BY PAT O’DAY
IT HAPPENS EVERY WEEK OR SO, someone will say to me, “Don’t you think Rock-and-Roll is on its way out?” The question is usually sponsored by some well-meaning fan of the Glenn Miller era who has never been able to discover the charm of contemporary (post 1955) music. Rock-and-Roll on its way out? Are automobiles here to stay?

We now have an entire generation of citizens who have discovered something in the rhythm and blues and rocking-beat that they were unable to find in the creations prior to 1955. Granted, there are those who have broadened their music tastes to jazz, classics, or never have or will care for the modern sound.

Let’s face it, not everyone liked the big-band music either. No one form of music can be all things to all people. Strangely enough, radio broadcasting parallels this irrefutable truth. No one radio station can be all things to all people. Those that attempt it, surveys list as the “also-rans.

Ironically, the Rock-and-Roll music fan does not necessarily suffer from a lack of appreciation of other forms of music. If you question this, look at the above list of popular tunes (KJR FAB FIFTY survey), you’ll find everything from Western to lush choral arrangements, from Tony Bennett solos to the Beatles. Popular music has never enjoyed a broader, more creative, spectrum. (1965)
