The Peanut Gallery That Is CNN

Dan Patrick
CNN has recently experimented with a more casual, podcast-inspired aesthetic on some of its evening programs, including those hosted by Jake Tapper (The Lead) and Anderson Cooper (Anderson Cooper 360°, or AC360). This shift involves anchors broadcasting from non-traditional studio setups—like actual offices or newsroom desks—using prominent, oversized desk microphones, rolled-up sleeves, and a less polished, conversational vibe.

CNN executives framed the changes as an experiment in “different deliveries” for news, especially amid special programming (e.g., around international events like coverage involving Iran). The goal appears to be: Making the shows feel more authentic, intimate, and conversational—like popular independent podcasts or YouTube-style content that viewers consume digitally.
Borrowing from the success of podcast aesthetics, which often emphasize raw, desk-mic setups over glossy TV production.
Appealing to digital-first and younger audiences by breaking the traditional “newsroom” fourth wall.

So, will we see Dan Patrick, Shannon Sharpe or Joe Rogan hosting an evening show on CNN? Colbert will need a place to land when his contract expires with CBS this year. I really want Katt Williams’ take on the Iran war.
