Maer began his career in local radio, working at stations in the St. Louis area (including WGNU and WIBV), Nashville, and Atlanta. In Atlanta, he covered state government and the Civil Rights Movement in the 1970s.
He joined the network level in the mid-1970s and became a prominent White House correspondent, primarily for CBS News Radio (and at times affiliated with Mutual/NBC Radio). He covered the White House beat from 1986 until his retirement in 2015, reporting on presidents from Jimmy Carter through Barack Obama. His reporting reached audiences nationwide via stations like Chicago’s WBBM and others.
