Eddie Haskell, who knew he would grow up to be a solid citizen?

Ken Osmond (best known as Eddie Haskell from Leave It to Beaver) had a real and at times dangerous career as a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer from 1970 to 1988, primarily working as a motorcycle officer.

He joined the force after struggling with typecasting from his child-actor days and served for about 18 years. His duties included traffic enforcement, high-speed chases, and general patrol work in areas like Rampart. He also spent time in vice and narcotics assignments, though details on those are less publicized.

Osmond experienced significant on-the-job action, including pursuits and arrests typical of a busy urban police motorcycle unit in 1970s–1980s Los Angeles. He was involved in foot chases, vehicle pursuits, and confrontations with suspects. His partner in one notable incident later received a Medal of Valor for actions during the event.

Osmond faced life-threatening danger on at least two occasions in 1980:
September 20, 1980 (main incident) – While on duty as a motorcycle officer, Osmond and his partner were pursuing a suspected car thief/robbery suspect. During a foot chase, the armed suspect turned and fired at close range. Osmond was hit by three bullets. Two were stopped by his bullet-resistant (Kevlar) vest (one of the early real-world saves credited to the new technology).
The third ricocheted off his belt buckle, narrowly missing vital areas.
His partner, Henry Lane, engaged the suspect (who advanced with gun drawn after Osmond was hit), subdued him, and helped save Osmond’s life. Osmond was knocked back by the impacts but survived and was hospitalized. The incident was later dramatized in a 1992 episode of the CBS series Top Cops.

About a month later: A bullet fired by a security guard (in a separate incident) came extremely close—close enough to “part his hair,” according to reports. He survived this as well.

These events contributed to trauma, depression, and ongoing issues with department supervisors. Osmond applied for a disability pension, which was initially denied but ultimately granted by a court in 1988, leading to his retirement.
