The first Co-op utility in the United States, Parkland Light and Water Company, was established by my grandfather Elmer Ellingson in 1909. He was its president until 1937 when he keeled over and died at a lunch counter on Pacific Avenue. When they got his body to Tacoma General, the admitting nurses were two of his five daughters, my aunts Olga and Verna.
My dad used to enjoy bragging about the time he drove his 1926 Essex out on ice-bound Spanaway Lake.
