I was never involved with Kugs. But the licensing applications were in the works when I was at Western as a young adult. And the main proponent behind the signal was another student named Steve Smith. Since I was working Bellingham commercial radio at the time, people got us confused. I graduated in 1974 and the campus station went on the air sometime in that general timeframe. I don’t recall the specific year. I know that Ben Dawson, the well known Seattle PE, was involved in getting bugs out of the technical FCC paperwork.

KUGS hit the air with a whopping 10 watts ERP & was one of my favorite ‘hunting targets’ with my large rotatable FM yagi antenna. Sure enough I did hear it a few times at that power rating. Sometime in the early ’80’s they increased to 100 watts & just showed up one day on my receiver. My wife then became a long-time listener to the long-running Hawaiian music show heard Sat. mornings.
