One of the Outer Limits episodes airing tonight on Pluto Tv was The Galaxy Being. Disc Jockey and station co-owner, Buddy Maxwell (Lee Philips), realizes that his brother, the station engineer and co-owner, Allan Maxwell (Cliff Robertson), has drained power in the area while researching microwave background noise using a device powered from the radio station. An alien from Andromeda appears on the three-dimensional television screen and is brought to Earth when a substitute deejay turns up the power in the broadcast studio. In the course of all the chaos and destruction, the radio tower crashes to the ground. The substitute jock is killed. He violated FCC rules by turning up the power after sunset. Darn fool!
The radio station is KXKVI in Los Feliz, a neighborhood of Los Angeles. Dial position 1820. That’s beyond the Outer Limits of the AM band.
Here is a clip from the program, taking you inside the KXKVI studio…

More about the radio station in this show

Production took place at the real-life KCBH (a classical music FM station at the time, now known as KYSR, “Star 98.7”), located at 9000 Alto Cedro Drive in Coldwater Canyon/Beverly Hills, California. They used both the exteriors (including the building and grounds) and interiors (studios, transmitter areas) for authentic-looking scenes of the station operations, control room, and transmitter shed. Additional filming occurred on the MGM backlot and at KTTV soundstage #3, but the radio station itself provided key location shooting over nine days.

I’ve been trying to DX this station since it first came on the air. Would love to receive a QSL card from them. Probably the rarest catch in all of radio broadcasting.

I heard they lost their license and went dark in 1963 after some violations due to unauthorized power increases, illegal television transmissions (KXKVI was not licensed for tv) and destruction of the transmission tower, all due to crazy actions by the engineer/co-owner of KXKVI.

My absolute favorite episode of The Outer Limits I always wondered if the interior shots were done at KTTV studios or actually done at KXKVI KCBH back then today known as KYSR
For over a year when I first saw this episode as I was only 11 I couldn’t go upstairs to bed alone Yes true story
This was so daring considering it was the early 60’s

My guess, based on the microphone just setting on the board rather than being a boom mic setup, this was recreated in the CBS Television studio. Outside shots may have been at the station.

Hmmm, Maybe this was filmed at the studio after all. https://qzvx.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/dougnelson.jpg (Doug Nelson at the KCBH studio)

I couldn’t do a 4-hour shift without headphones. Buddy Maxwell was a real laid-back pro.
