May 3, 1957 – Vancouver Sun

The listings reference Seattle stations and a couple California signals that could be heard at times.

  1. 1957, the twilight of US network radio

An interesting post, Jason. Jack Benny, Gunsmoke, Suspense, Johnny Dollar, The FBI in Peace and War, Our Miss Brooks, were still on the air. The soap operas were to end in the early 1960s as I recall. The New York Philharmonic broadcast indicates that the arts had not completely vanished. The NBC program Monitor was a late and I believe successful attempt to keep network radio alive for a few more years.

In Canada, the CBC (CBU), had a distinct, intellectual audience which appreciated cultural programming. However, this did not draw large audiences.
