The clip is from a December 2014 CNN Saturday panel (Margaret Hoover, Sally Kohn, Mel Robbins, and Sunny Hostin). Three of them raised their hands in the “hands up, don’t shoot” gesture; Hostin held a sign reading “I can’t breathe.”
They were expressing solidarity with demonstrators then marching in New York, Washington, D.C., and other cities. Those protests followed a Ferguson, Missouri grand jury’s decision not to charge officer Darren Wilson in the shooting of Michael Brown, along with other high-profile cases involving police use of force against Black suspects (notably Eric Garner in New York). Panelists said thousands of people were demanding a justice system that applied equally to everyone.
