Former Sonics broadcaster heads to Minnesota

After decades in the Pacific Northwest, former SuperSonics and Trailblazers broadcaster Kevin Calabro has a new home.
The Minnesota Timberwolves announced that Calabro would join the team as a play-by-play announcer in the upcoming season. Calabro became a free agent after his contract with the Blazers expired at the end of June. He told The Oregonian that he received a “subprime” offer when discussing a new deal with the team.
“Easy decision. Not worth my time,” Calabro told The Athletic of his decision to leave the Blazers. “Which is sad because it’s a great roster and the people there are great.”
He will call the action in Minnesota alongside fellow newcomer Jon Sciambi and 29-season veteran Jim Petersen. The Wolves also announced that Meghan McPeak would join as the new sideline reporter.
Calabro is expected to call about half of the Timberwolves games.
Calabro spent two decades as the voice of the Sonics. He began alongside Bob Blackburn during the 1987-88 season and later became the sole broadcaster for the team in 1992. Calabro called the rise of the Sonics during the 1990s and stayed with the organization until the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City after the 2008 season.
Before he joined the Blazers in 2016, Calabro called the Sounders’ first MLS season and moved into a national broadcast role with TNT, NBA TV and ESPN Radio.

Swisher looks for exit

Now that the group of state attorneys general have settled their lawsuit with Paramount, the company’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery is expected to close within the next few weeks.
One person who won’t be a part of the new company is CNN contributor Kara Swisher. CNN is owned by WBD, but will soon become part of Paramount. Swisher has been critical of Paramount CEO David Ellison, as well as his father, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, and said in March, “I don’t think they’ll be good owners, I don’t. I think they’ve already shown several times, including editorial choices … that they have no interest in journalism. And I refuse to work for an organization that doesn’t respect journalists.”
Swisher, apparently, is staying true to her word. On the latest episode of the “Pivot” podcast with Scott Galloway, Swisher said, “I have asked my agent to get me out of my contract. It ends Dec. 31, so it’s only a few months, right? I just can’t. … I was trying to figure out ways I could work with them in some like licensing way, but then I thought, ‘(Expletive) these guys! I don’t want to work for them. I just don’t.’”
A contributor to THE VIEW. Well, no wonder I never heard of her.

BACKGROUND: Kara Swisher is best known as a print and digital tech journalist and podcaster, not as a traditional TV news reporter or anchor. Her television work has mostly been as a commentator, guest, and later a CNN contributor rather than a staff correspondent covering beats on air.
She started in newspapers: intern and reporter at The Washington Post in the 1980s–90s, then The Wall Street Journal from 1997, where she wrote the “BoomTown” column and co-created the All Things Digital conference and site with Walt Mossberg. She co-founded Recode in 2014, wrote for The New York Times Opinion section (2018–2022), and has been editor-at-large at New York Magazine while hosting the podcasts On with Kara Swisher and Pivot.
On television she has been a frequent guest for years on programs such as Real Time with Bill Maher, The View, Sunday political shows, and CNBC business segments. Older biographies noted weekly CNBC appearances as a commentator.
In November 2023 she joined CNN as an on-air contributor. She served as a regular panelist on The Chris Wallace Show and provided commentary on tech, media, and culture during breaking-news coverage. In 2026 she hosted the six-part CNN Original Series Kara Swisher Wants to Live Forever, a documentary examining longevity science, wellness culture, and related technology. She has also filled in on The View and made guest or cameo appearances on other shows.
*Not a major player in TV news. Checked images on Google. Looks like a dyed in the wool Libster. Now, too old and unattractive to make it on major networks as an anchor. She could still get a slot on The View, maybe replacing that lying Sunny Hostin.
Googled out of curiosity– BINGO! Veteran tech journalist and podcaster Kara Swisher is an out lesbian who has frequently spoken about her identity and experiences as an LGBTQ+ woman in the technology and media industries.

During the heated panel discussion alongside journalist Peter Beinart, Goldstein addressed aid distribution challenges, accused Hamas of diverting resources, and reflected on her prior on-the-ground reporting and interviews in the region.

At the U.N. Tuesday, Collins tried to ask Trump about polling showing that most Americans don’t think the U.S. is winning the war in Iran.
Trump said, “It’s an honor to be here. I’m surprised that CNN is here covering me.”
Collins said, “The United Nations allowed us in, sir.”
Trump responded by saying, “You should not be here covering me. You said you weren’t going to cover me. You shouldn’t be covering me.”
To be clear, CNN and Collins have not said they wouldn’t cover Trump.
CNN: “We will not be deflected from our duty to hold the government and other public bodies to account, and we will continue to report on the actions and processes of this administration without fear or favor.”
CNN, MS NOW and Politico have sued the administration in an attempt to get their White House press credentials restored. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly has scheduled a videoconference hearing on the outlets’ request for 3:30 p.m. Eastern today.

The ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico was a hot topic on the Sunday morning news shows.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise got into a combative exchange when ABC “This Week” host Jonathan Karl asked about Trump’s ban.
Scalise first defended Trump, saying the president often makes himself available to the press. Then, at one point, Scalise said, “Go look at Joe Biden. Joe Biden removed the press credentials from over 400 different agencies. You know, what President Trump’s done has brought a lot of those back in. But he wants a free and fair press.”
But credit to Karl for immediately fact-checking Scalise, saying, “That’s actually not true about Biden. The 400 individual reporters who had credentials did not reapply. There was only one that was actually denied a credential. And all of those who didn’t reapply were allowed to come in. They were not banned from the White House. That did not happen.”
Then, at one point, Scalise said, “I’ve never seen him turn a question down from anybody. … Where he takes questions from everybody, and some of them are very hostile questions, and the president sits there and takes them, answers them all.”
Answers them all?
C’mon, Steve, we’ve all seen Trump tell reporters to ‘’shut up’’, ‘’be quiet’’, ‘’quiet piggy’’ (!)
Battle of the ban

CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a legal challenge on Monday against President Trump’s order barring them from the White House grounds, the latest battle in a fight over journalistic independence instigated by the president. Four major TV networks said they were suspending their shared coverage of presidential events in response to the president’s action.
The three outlets argued in their lawsuit that Mr. Trump’s ban, which he imposed over what he sees as negative news media coverage, violates the First Amendment. The case was assigned to a federal judge who was nominated by Mr. Trump who previously sided with CNN when the White House attempted to expel one of its White House reporters in 2018.
The major TV networks did not bring cameras to Trump’s ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new helipad on the South Lawn. Watching the White House’s official YouTube stream, it was impossible to hear any of the president’s remarks. The audio is completely garbled.
Speaking of ratings

As an adendum to the recent discussion of “60 Minutes” ratings, this little sidebar.
The Republican Party held a two-night midterm convention (Sept. 9-10). The first night featured a nearly two-hour speech by President Trump. Wednesday’s GOP festivities and Trump’s speech went up against the first game of the NFL season, a Super Bowl rematch between the Seahawks and New England Patriots. (Nothing, as we know, can compete with the NFL on TV ratings.)
Nevertheless, the next day, Trump took to Truth Social and wrote, “The overall numbers beat the NFL.” It wasn’t clear what numbers Trump was referring to because no ratings had been released at the time of his post.
Now the numbers are out and Trump’s speech was crushed by the NFL. The game averaged 25.1 million viewers on NBC and Peacock. Trump’s speech — aired on Fox News, Newsmax and NewsNation — had about 3 million viewers.
Things didn’t get any better for Trump the next night at the convention. A second, shorter Trump speech drew about 2.6 million viewers on Fox News, 350,000 on Newsmax and 100,000 or so on NewsNation.
An NFL game in Australia between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams aired on Netflix at the same time. That game averaged 18.5 million U.S. viewers.
So, not the brightest idea for the GOP to schedule its convention against the NFL on both nights.
No White House Access

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he would immediately ban CNN, MSNOW, and Politico from the White House.
Trump accused the left-wing outlets of repeatedly reporting falsehoods, vowing that more news outlets would also be banned.
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them “alive.” Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant “reporting” FAKE NEWS!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
He added that “Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America.”
Trump revealed that “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow,” implying that other establishment outlets would also lose their White House access.
He signed the post with, “Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
Prominent conservative journalist Nick Sortor commented on the move shortly after the announcement.
“This was LONG overdue. Kaitlan Collins in particular is EXTREMELY rude and REGULARLY interrupts President Trump in the Oval Office I’ve been calling for her in particular to be banned from the Oval Office for WELL over a year now,” Sortor wrote.
Trump has made similar decisions during his second administration, although the outright ban of CNN, MSNOW, and Politico appears to be the most extensive.
They were able to continue accessing White House briefings.

NEWSMAX sues FOXNEWS for ratings equity

Newsmax sued Fox, alleging it illegally dominates right-leaning pay-TV news with roughly 90% share and uses restrictive carriage deals to sideline rivals like Newsmax and OAN through poor placement and penalties. The suit also claims intimidation tactics and seeks antitrust damages. Fox calls it an attempt to sue away Newsmax’s own competitive shortcomings and says they compete in a wider news market. After an earlier Florida dismissal and a Wisconsin detour over forum shopping, the case returned to Florida. Judge Ed Artau has now paused discovery while he considers Fox’s motion to dismiss. A grant ends the case; a denial restarts it. No trial date is set.

A Trump hissy fit or a real decision?
This comes after Trump’s move back in February of last year to keep reporters from the AP out of White House coverage after the outlet decided not enact his name changes for the Gulf of America.
The AP filed a lawsuit and that case is still pending.
