Twiggy – Mod Icon, Cockney Kid, Superstar Model

Twiggy became popular because she looked like the 1960s arriving all at once. Born Lesley Hornby in working-class Neasden/London, she was 16 when the Daily Express called her “The Face of ’66.”

She was popular because she was new, photogenic, and perfectly matched a youth culture that wanted to look young, thin, and modern — not like their mothers. The look was extreme enough to be unforgettable and simple enough for teenagers to imitate.
